Apartheid was first implemented in 1948-1990's by the governing party of South Africa. This was a system of separating both the blacks and whites. Under the apartheid, nonwhite South Africans (majority of the population) were forced to live in separate areas from the whites, use separate public facilities, and separate schooling. Contacts in public between the two were very limited this way. In the beginning, the blacks approached a much more peaceful stance towards the whites with peaceful rallies, but when the whites refused to listen Nelson Mandela took it in his hands to create the Spear of Nations. It was then that violence became necessary for apartheid to come to an end as it was the only way for the blacks to be heard; however not necessary for whites to abuse and kill hundreds of black people.
Resistance towards Apartheid in South Africa took many forms. From non-violence demonstrations, protest and strikes, to open armed violence. When the ANC banned together to create the Spear of Nations with Nelson Mandela, it was the violent wing of the ANC. This group formed to ensure the voice of the black people was being heard to the South African government, whether it was a peaceful message or not. The result of Nelson Mandela's actions with the Spear of Nations got him a life's worth of imprisonment.
After being sent to prison, not all was lost for things to turn around for the blacks. Many university students saw what the whites were doing to the blacks, and realized that it was not right. After the Soweto Uprising, they started to march with the blacks at protests. This actions that were taken by the students is what helped the non-white South Africans and free Nelson Mandela out of prison.
In 1976, thousand of black children in Soweto demonstrated against the Afrikaans language requirement black students just outside of Johannesburg. This was the instance where white officers opened fire with tear gas and bullets on the crowds. The acts that were placed by the whites in order for the black not to have their rights was devastating. Both young and old were killed in order for the rights and freedoms. With this, it drew more international attention to South Africa. From that pressure, the government sought out different reforms to help relieve tension from the international community. Eventually with those acts, it marked the official end to Apartheid.
South Africa was very unstable throughout the times of Apartheid. Being in a state of emergency after the Sharpesville Massacre, 1960, created more tension between the blacks and whites. When DeKlerk was announced President, he made many changes to help the blacks be heard. Legalizing the ANC was the first step, then working with Nelson Mandela himself to end Apartheid. The whites has used violence unnecessarily to kill innocent black people who were only protesting for their beliefs and rights. While the blacks used violence to have their voice, rights and freedoms be heard to the white community. This helped end Apartheid and more equalization in South Africa.
