In my opinion, the most significant turning point for the allies was when they defeated Germany in the Battle of Stalingrad. The battle for the city turned into one of the most brutal in WWII. The reason this is the most significant turning point is because they took Germany's power. During the battle 91,000 Germans were taken prisoner, and due to loosing so many men and equipment, the Russians had defeated the Germans. Once Germany was defeated the Allies became stronger. They were now able to help other countries gain their power back and all fight against the Germans. If the Russians had lost the battle, they would have been able to take control of Russia, which would have expanded their empire. Therefore making The Battle of Stalingrad the most significant turning point for Allies in WWII.

Winston Churchill's quote was based on the Dunkirk evacuations. The Dunkirk evacuation was the evacuation of allied soldiers and from the harbour Dunkirk, France. The quote refers to the strength of French, Britain, and Belgium troops and when they were surrounded in Dunkirk on the beaches. If the men were to fight their way out, it would have a been a gruesome battle, killing many of their men. So instead they evacuated. Churchill believed that if the evacuated constantly were to happen it would only extend the war. When he said this quote to civilians, he also said that evacuating may have seemed like a good idea it was not. Having done this plan may have saved lives but did not allow their country to succeed in their goal of winning the war.
The film starts of with the devastating 24 minute battle scene. During the scene, we were introduced to "Ryan". Later in the movie, Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall found out that three of the four Ryan brothers have been killed in a single week. He then decides that is it necessary that the fourth "Ryan" brother, named James Ryan (Matt Damon), whom is still alive be sent back to the United States. Captain gets the assignment to retrieve James Ryan and give him the news about his family. It is a treacherous adventure for the group of skilled men who Captain brought with him. After losing one of his men in a bombed village, the other soldiers start to question whether losing more lives to save a single soldier is worth it. They end up finding James Ryan however he didn't take the news too well. He made it clear that he is not going home, he wants to fight for his brothers and family.
I think that the movie perfectly demonstrates the what emotions and war would look like. I thought it was very interesting when the men would sit around to talk to about how their lives were before the war. |
